Chromosome Aberrations in Persons Professionally Exposed to Ionizing Radiation Effects

چکیده
Modern radiation cytogenetics has adopted the principle that DNA molecule as an essential biological substrate is the most important target of ionizing radiation. This action may result in delicate lesions of the hereditary material that may be manifested in the form of structural chromosomal aberrations. This study present results of years of cytogenetic studies of chromosomal aberrations in individuals occupationally exposed to action of ionizing radiation (684 subjects). In the period 1995-1996 the incidence of chromosomal aberrations was increased in individuals working in nuclear medicine, reaching 19.10%-10.90%.The major increase of the incidence of chromosomal aberrations was noted in 1997-1998 in radiologists and x-ray technicians, reaching the level of 23.52%-19.64%.Chromosomal aberrations such as dyscentrics, ring chromosomes and acentric fragments were noted. Occupational exposure was particularly delicate due to chronic exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation when, due to cumulative action of radiation it is very important to get insight into the biological response of an organism to the given exposure conditions.

The growing use of ionizing radiation in various sectors of industry, medicine, agriculture and research has increased the risk of radiation exposure of staff and people. Ionizing radiation as a strong clastogen can cause different types of DNA damages and chromosomal aberrations. Biological dosimetry, based on the cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes has a wide application in d...

Long-term exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation may affect cells and tissues and result in various adverse health effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether chromosome aberrations and haematological alterations could be used as biomarkers of possible radiation injury in workers exposed to ionizing radiation. Groups totalling 323 medical professionals handling X-ray equi...

The genotoxic effects of occupational exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation were investigated in 25 physicians and nurses working in hospitals and in 20 individuals working at radio-relay stations. Examination was conducted by chromosome aberration analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes. The data showed that total number of chromosome aberrations in people exposed to ionizing and ra...
متن کاملAberrations of Genetic Material as Biomarkers of Ionizing Radiation Effects
Ionizing radiation is the most powerful mutagen in environmental and working conditions. The result of genotoxic effect of radiation is the development of chromosome aberrations. The structural chromosome aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes are dicentric, ring, acentric fragment. The observation of chromosome aberration frequency in lymphocyte karyotype is the conclusive method to asses...
متن کاملComplex chromosome aberrations persist in individuals many years after occupational exposure to densely ionizing radiation: an mFISH study.
Long-lived, sensitive, and specific biomarkers of particular mutagenic agents are much sought after and potentially have broad applications in the fields of cancer biology, epidemiology, and prevention. Many clastogens induce a spectrum of chromosome aberrations, and some of them can be exploited as biomarkers of exposure. Densely ionizing radiation, for example, alpha particle radiation (from ...
